Conference Presentation Overview: Negative Space CanePower Point Presentation PDF
What if you could take common cane–making techniques from polymer clay and apply them to metal clay? I started to experiment, curious to find out what would happen if you used a combustible material as one element in the caning process and metal clay as the other. After trial, error, and then some "aha moments", a new technique was born. The fruit of my labor was the creation of neat negative spaces in my work: Interesting filigree, chambers for enamel or polymer clay inlay, and cane slices that are easily duplicated for tessellating patterns. In addition, I could create elements that might otherwise be fragile in the working stage, but now have stability provided by the extra support of the combustible material –– the possibilities are endless. |
