Description:
One of the challenges facing the emerging artist is developing a sense of an individual style and a recognizable artistic identity. This two–fold emergence is essential for the creation of truly original work.
Developing an individual style is a gradual process. It happens over time and emerges through sustained periods of dedicated activity. It is the evolution of personal expression. This developmental evolution can be effectively accelerated by applying a systematic approach to the process of design.
Using a systematic approach provides a strategy to take design ideas all the way through from beginning concepts to completed work. Understanding this system and applying this process repeatedly in a reliable and purposeful fashion leads to the increasing development of an individual style.
Artistic identity starts with recognition that the process of making original work is also an evolution. This evolution begins with developing self awareness. Cultivating an authentic and recognizable artistic identity evolves from a process of introspection directed outwards as a creative expression.
Developing individual style and artistic identity assists us in creating a cohesive body of work with recognizable features and characteristics, ready for dynamic presentation. We accomplish this with a two fold approach; group exploration as an overview, and an individual exploration as an inner view.

Students will need drawing supplies and writing materials; paper, pen, pencil, makers, colored pencils, notebook. Other tools such as design templates, ruler, compass, protractor, etc. may also be useful. Utilizing photographs of previous completed work, original sketches, design ideas, and works in progress is encouraged.
This course will focus on development and refinement of ideas and concepts and detailing a strategy for completing a series of work, not on making finished objects during class.
At the end of this two day program participants will come away with two tangible results:
- a well refined design idea for a series of original cohesive work
- a strategic plan for taking the series from concept to completion
In addition to developing a concept into a design series for a specific body of work, the students will also develop the other counterpart necessary for effective communication to a viewing audience. This entails conceiving a plan for presentation of the work with the proper foundation of supporting elements. We will discuss merchandising, display, signage, brochures, cards, postcards… everything one needs to consider for a successful dynamic presentation.

Instructor: Robert Dancik
Date: Monday, July 11, 2011
Time: 9am – 5pm
Class Size: Limited to 15 Students!
1–Day Registration Fee: $200.00
Mandatory Kit Fee: $20.00
Kit Includes: full set of Faux Bone as well as special "unbreakable" blades for cutting the material
Supply List: The following list is suggested tools and materials for the workshop. I will have additional materials to use and some to buy if so desired. I also encourage you to bring along projects in process where you have encountered problems or stumbling blocks and we can look at them together. If there are materials you want to use but don’t know exactly how, bring those along and we’ll experiment how they might be used with or without the Faux Bone™. Don’t hesitate to email me if you’ve any questions before the workshop. You can also take a look at my site, www.robertdancik.com which has a link to my Faux Bone™ website. I will have lots of extra materials and tools to buy so no need to fret about this stuff either.
Tools:
- Jeweler’s saw frame (I will have special "unbreakable" blades for you to use)
- Bench pin for sawing
- Xacto™ or similar craft knife
- Files – 6" or larger with a medium cut, needle files, while OK are not adequate for many operations and some larger files are needed. Wood files work just fine.
- Wet or Dry sandpaper (silicone carbide) grits – 320, 400, 600 – 1 sheet each grit
- Your favorite tools for whatever type of work you may want to pursue
- Paper and writing tools for drawing and notes
- Cheap, throw–away brush or two, 1"–2" wide
Materials:
- Any paint you choose (acrylic will work best) in any colors you think you may want to use (you don’t need much)
- Shoe polish, Kiwi™ is a good brand, brown, black – shoe cream can also work
- Pieces and parts of work from your "I just want to run this stupid thing over with a truck" pile of unfinished work – metal clay or any other material you choose
- Any material you may want to experiment with
Optional:
- 1 pkg. of 2 part epoxy resin (Devcon, Loctite, or other) – I will have some to use.
- Small heat gun like those used for embossing powders
- Ephemera you may want to attach to the Faux Bone
- Ranger alcohol inks – any color (I will have lots to share and purchase)
- Wire for inlay and possible wrapping (any wire will do)
- Sheet metal (any will do) just a bit for experimentation
- Tools you may be unsure of or uncomfortable working with
Description: In this very hands–on workshop, you will explore Faux Bone™, a new, friendly inexpensive and extremely versatile material. You’ll learn how it marries perfectly with all metal clays and most any other material including epoxy resins, traditional metal work, paper, and transfers. Faux Bone can be cut, and carved, sawn and sanded. It can be filed, hammered, polished, drilled, stamped, inlayed, dyed, and painted. It can look like ivory, have the patina of aged ceramic, or be polished to a pure white. It is so strong you can rivet on it, die form right into it, or hammer metal around it. It’s next to unbreakable and if used to mount your fired metal clay, allows you to use extremely thin sheets of metal clay (thus stretching your budget) without fear of breaking. You can attach your findings to the Faux Bone, which may or may not show in the final piece. You can heat and bend it with nothing more than a small embossing heat–gun and it can be easily embossed or carved to make unique texture plates for your metal clay.

Description:
In this class you wil create small cells using fine silver wires which are fused to the surface of the silver piece using Art Clay Silver Overaly paste. They are then enamelled to create a free standing cloisonné effect allowing you to bring colour to your work wherever you want. By using this controlled technique it eliminates the possibility of the wires melting during the fusing process and there are no solder joins to cause problems whilst enamelling. In this workshop we will create a piece from start to finish including choosing suitable surface textures, shaping and attaching wires for the cells and the preparation, wet laying and firing of the enamels.

The metal clay for the ring shank and the reversed top lentil are textured with the ’sand technique’, developed by the Japanese master Taku Hirai. The sand technique texture is a new way to make your own personal textures. In class you get a full explanation of the basic technique and then you will make your own texture, using real old Belgian lace. Jewelry with other possibilities of the sand technique will be showed in class.
During the firing process of the ring, I’ll give demonstration of the ’cutting edge’ technique, developed by the Canadian polymer clay artist Dan Cormier. By mixing different clays ,cutting and rearranging the clay he obtains beautiful lines and shines in the clay. You will make your own cutting edge slab in polymer clay . Different colors of clay will be provided in class. After firing and finishing the ring, the polymer clay is added to the ring , baked and sanded.
